Killing with kindness?

The House Republicans are apparently pushing a resolution that . . . well, basically, that calls for things that the Iranian protesters don't actually want, and risks tarring them with our big, nasty brush. Over at TAPPED, Adam Serwer's halfheartedly floating the idea that this is might be a backhanded show of support for Ahmadinejad, the stuff of neocons' most passionately held Manichean thought experiments, but let's be fair: I think most of us want to stand up and be counted with the good guys here. [Insignificant green-fonted bloggers can even get away with it!] The U.S. as a nation, though, has to be a lot more careful; Mike Pence may not think our role in Mohammed Mossadegh's downfall is relevant to the current scene, but I guarantee that Khamenei and Ahmadinejad would love - love! - to have a pretext for arguing the contrary.

If nothing else, I'd think it should really come down to this: the demonstrators and the political figures associated with them aren't clamoring for dramatic shows of support, and it's their show.
